Lieutenant-General Idriss Déby was the President of Chad in 2005. He came to power in a coup on 1990 December 2 deposing then president Hissène Habré. Elected as president in 1996 March, he was re-elected in 2001. In 2006 he removed the two-term presidential limit. Attempts to remove him from power were made in 2006 and 2008, but both failed. He was subsequently re-elected in 2006, 2011, and 2016, amidst boycotted elections.

Malam Bacai Sanhá was the President of Guinea Bissau at the beginning of 2012, but died on January 9 from complications from Diabetes. Raimundo Pereira took over as acting president. A presidential election was held on March 18, and Carlos Gomes Júnior receiving 48.97% of the votes in the first round was expected to win the presidency in the run-off election. However, the military intervened, staging a coup detat on April 12. The militarys leader, Mamadu Ture Kuruma became interim president as Chairman of the Military Command of Guinea-Bissau. On 2012 May 11, Manuel Serifo Nhamadjo was appointed as acting President.
