A distance of about 17 miles [27 kilometers; 14.7 nautical miles] separates Aruba and Venezuela at their closest point. El Cabo San Roman [Cape San Roman] is the northernmost point of mainland Venezuela. Its located at the end of the Paraguana Peninsula in northwest Venezuela.

However, unlike Bonaire and Curacao which are nearby Dutch-controlled islands, Aruba achieved status aparte on January 1, 1986, and therefore has local government powers for an array of local matters and has its own Flag and its own Anthem, both celebrated on Flag and Anthem Day, March 17, each yeaer.
