What is Trephining in psychology?
-
Trephination is a surgical procedure in which a circular part of the skull is carved away leaving a hole in the skull. It is theorized that early cultures used trephination to release spirits from a person or as a cure for convulsions and headaches.

In drilling into the skull and removing a piece of the bone, the dura mater is exposed without damage to the underlying blood-vessels, meninges and brain. Trephination has been used to treat health problems associated with intracranial diseases, epileptic seizures, migraines and mental disorders by relieving pressure.
Also Know, is trepanation still used today? Trepanation is still used today, often to treat bleeding on the brain. However, making a permanent hole in someones head isnt a safe thing to do, and these days if a doctor makes a hole in a skull they usually replace the bone and patch it up.
Subsequently, one may also ask, can you survive Trephination?
The trepanation was apparently not survived. The second individual shows two trepanations and probably died during or short time after the second surgical intervention. The high survival rate indicates that neurosurgeries were often performed successfully in prehistoric times.
Why was trepanation performed?
The first is medical trephination that is performed by doctors to relieve pressure of the brain after an injury, such as a head trauma caused by a car accident. Therefore, they believe that cutting a small hole in the skull will allow the brain to pulsate again and increase the volume of the blood in the brain.
