We have no evidence that Peter ever went to Rome. In his epistles, considered to have been written more than twenty years after the death of Jesus, Paul talks of Peter as being one of the pillars of the Jerusalem church, and an occasional visitor to Syria. At this stage, Peter would have already been a relatively old man for his era, unlikely to start a new venture in a city that already had a Christian community. The story of his martyrdom in Rome did not arise until the middle of the second century. If indeed Peter made a journey to Rome, for which no documentation survives, he could have travelled by sea or land.
