Not all plugs are the same size. There are the common spark plug sockets used with a common-sized spark plug socket wrench which are very popular and used in many different types of cars. But you cannot be really sure that your vehicle uses these. You should find out the type of the socket and then check the size.

While you should buy spark plugs in matching sets for your vehicle, not all spark plugs are universal. Spark plugs come in different sizes with different gaps and are manufactured using a variety of metals.

Spark plugs are essential for your vehicle and it’s imperative that you make sure you’ve got them in your motor when they need replacing. The last thing you need is to be caught short and stranded with a failed vehicle
Finding the ones that you need can be difficult.

Spark plugs should be replaced every 30,000 miles. The factors that should prompt you to check whether or not your spark plugs are in bad condition are: misfiring, rough idling, loss of performance, spark plug fouling(this can also be brought on by oil getting on the electrode thus preventing the spark plug from working properly)

    Types of Spark Plugs
Spark plugs can be split into two categories: standard and performance.

    • Performance spark plugs use superior-quality materials such as Iridium and Platinum, with better electrodes and more durable metal tabs. These stronger parts make it possible to run higher performance engines for longer distances. These performance spark plugs have a longer lasting electrode, providing a stable arc and improving efficiency. Additionally, spark plug cleaning is unnecessary with performance plugs.

    • Most spark plugs use expensive iridium electrodes, but standard plugs feature all-nickel metallic construction, which has 50% more heat resistance to extend the life of the plug. They are ideal for older or high-mileage vehicles, because they are better able to withstand the excessive temperatures caused by detonation. They are priced 40 to 50% less than other spark plugs, so they are a great value too!

    Replacing Your Spark Plugs

Spark plugs can be a mystery to even the most seasoned mechanic. The varying voltages and materials mean it’s important to buy the right ones for your engine, and even the right heat range if your engine gets particularly hot. With so many spark plug manufacturers available today, it’s vital to have a system that keeps track of all these different specs. You don’t want to buy the wrong spark plugs and hurt your vehicle.

The most important tool is a socket wrench with an extension and a spark plug socket. Spark plug sockets come in two sizes: 5/8 inches and 13/16 inches. Most spark plug sockets have a rubber insert that holds the plug snugly in place. You may also need a universal joint if your spark plugs are difficult to reach.

Subsequently, question is, are spark plugs universal? While you should buy spark plugs in matching sets for your vehicle, not all spark plugs are universal. Spark plugs come in different sizes with different gaps and are manufactured using a variety of metals.

Furthermore, how many different size spark plugs are there?

There are currently three spark plug thread diameter and pitch sizes used on motorcycles and ATVs: 10 mm x 1.0, 12 mm x 1.25 and 14 mm x 1.25. There are currently two thread reaches (lengths) used: 1/2 inch and 3/4 inch. Never use a spark plug of the wrong reach.

Can you use a regular socket for spark plugs?

You can use a regular socket, with that being said you need to be very careful. A spark plug socket has a washer on the end so that socket is always sitting fully down and straight. With a regular socket you will have wobble at the top.
